A Brief Leave of Absence

As of November 13, I resigned my position in Dispatch at the Anaheim Police Department (CA). Since January 2004, my primary responsibility has been answering 9-1-1 calls. On Halloween, I handled a suicide by gunshot incident, my second one within the year. Since then, I have been off work because I hear their voices in my head. After much thought, consideration, and prayer, I made the decision to resign because I do not want to do it anymore. My family, friends, coworkers, and the department have been very supportive over the last three weeks. I have served the City of Anaheim in different capacities since May 2002 and I am most grateful for all of those years, but it is time for a change and I must now exit with my head held high. I will chronicle more of my journey later. Thank you for your patience and support. To all those still serving: you are all in my thoughts… stay the course and carry on the good work.

  1. I don’t know you, and I will never get the chance to meet you. I work in a police Control Room in the south of England, answering 999 calls and dispatching police officers. I understand the strain and the stress that you must be going through. I have only been doing this for the past 5 or so years, but there are 2 phone calls that will always stick with me and still, I can hear the sounds I heard and still remember the exact words of what were said.
My thoughts are we you. Stay strong. Get help and carry on. Thank you for your service, only a selected few get to do what we do. Sending love from England.

  2. Ryan, thank you for your service and dedication. There are no words to help you through what you are facing. Just know that you are not alone. I hope that our paths cross again – you are a fine man and I am blessed to know you.
